Or, dealing with the world as it & you wake up together.
This is to address several correspondences from folks who are having things 'wake up' on them due to starting a functional practice, in this case, beginning the various works described in my book Six Ways.
To be clear: you'll have that. As we move into a relationship with the Field & the Others, things can get really, really wonky really, really fast. And it doesn't happen at all the same for different people. This is not a 'problem' as in something that you are doing wrong that has to be fixed, it's more like a side effect from over-stimulation of both ourselves & the other parties involved.
This can manifest as:
- everything breaking, electronics in particular
- we (or those around us) become emotionally unstable
- we (or those around us) become paranoid
- we experience semi-'poltergeist' type activity
- our sleep cycle gets fucked up
- we start to slip into whatever our 'self-abuse' cycle is
- etc, etc, you can just fill in the blanks
In most cases, this will settle down fast. But there are a few things you can do to help ease the transition a bit. How much it will help is too wide open of a question to even address!
First, it's time to begin making offerings to your allies, right now. Do it. Clear, cool water and non-spicy, cool scents only, white flowers are particularly good. Make offerings as discussed in the book, both to those spirits that aid & guard you and after that, all of those that hinder you, asking that they accept the offerings and chill out, 'let there be peace between us all of our days'.
Second, use the Box Breathing shown in this video from Mark Divine. Do this a lot, meaning 4-6 sessions of 3-5 minutes a day. More is OK, but it's far less effective done in one 20 minute session than 4 five minute ones.
Third, ask your allies to ease up. Let them know that you are aware of them, and you are still working out how to do the two-way communication thing. Make a time to be with them, sit down, light a candle, and tell them about your day, what you are working on, what is stressing you out (including the weird shit that is going on), and ask for their help in achieving 'smooth transitions' from where you are to where you want to go. Don't worry too much about the messaging in return just yet, as there is usually a bit of a muddle up front. Listen for it, but don't trip. In many cases, our allied spirits (or even closeted parts-of-self) are a bit like hyperactive children who just made a new friend when we first start paying them attention. It can be like the proverbial 'drinking from the fire hose'! (As a note, the term 'smooth transition' is a good one to include A LOT when doing work to change things!)
Four, do the scraping practice. Seriously, this is a big help in settling down the stranger and less pleasant manifestations, particularly those that may get kicked up by the Reclaiming Rite. There is MUCH more than meets the eye to this one. Simple, but not always easy. It is time to cut the cords to that which does not serve us. While this can create a bit of kick-back on its own, with regular practice it will ease things up quite a bit.
Five, be good to yourself. Make a cleansing bath with salt, purification herbs, and the like and do that thing a lot. Walk. Work out. If you find yourself in shitty self-talk, take a walk, do some exercise (seriously, do a few push-ups, some jumping jacks, hit the punching bag, run around the block, do something that makes you sweat), then sit down and just be quiet. Listen to that bullshit you are telling yourself and just note it: "I am experiencing shitty self-talk", and then get back to paying attention to your breathing.
All of these kinds of things, even the freaky manifestations are normal, especially for folks who are new to this kind of thing. This doesn't mean that they will be fun, or that you should let them run rampant. To me, they are all signs that there is work to be done, and that our magic is starting to work. It's totally OK to do work to settle your allies (and any Others or the aforementioned parts-of-self) down! Look into 'heating & cooling' in the book, and focus on the cooling for now. Be good to yourself. Know that everything passes.
