Geri and Freki
Geri and Freki
After building the Wolf Hammer and working on a custom wolf ring for a client, this design began calling to me. Odin's wolves are called Geri and Freki - ravenous and greedy. As such I perceive them as faces of the grave itself, always hungry, never sated. Here they face each other, and in the center stands an Eihwaz rune, the Yew. The Yew is a cemetery tree, is wholly poisonous, and is the preferred wood for bows. Yet more of the grave here, death (and so life) abounds. Eihwaz can be seen as a form of the World Tree, Yggdrasil, whose shape I think of as 'hooked' into the World Above and the World Below, passing through this world, and is thus the 'vehicle' of Odin/Woden between the realms of the dead, the living, and of the gods (and so also associated with Sleipnir). Odin/Woden lives here in his (and the practitioners who walks his way) most clearly shamanic, shapeshifting Lord of the Dead persona.
A piece for walking the tree, shapeshifting, and for the dead.
Drop a line if you are interested in a different rune in the center, as well! This one suits me and my path, but another might serve you and yours!
